Introducing our Partner: Washington Memorial Heritage

Built in the early 1900s in honor of George Washington and the legacy of Valley Forge, Washington Memorial at Valley Forge is a sprawling 50-acre campus located adjacent to Valley Forge National Historical Park. Father Herbert Burk, an Episcopal Priest, envisioned the site when he brought a group of young boys to see where Washington and his men had camped and endured unimaginable hardships. After his visit, he vowed to build the site’s crown jewel, Washington Memorial Chapel, which is now on the National Register of Historic Places. The historic site also includes a cemetery, Defender’s Gate, built in honor of Civil War veterans, the Cloister of the Colonies, a limestone homage to the 13 original colonies, an iconic bell tower that houses one of the world’s finest carillons, and the original Justice Bell, a symbol of women’s suffrage. Together, these historic features are a symbol of American resilience, leadership, and faith.

Since its inception, the leadership at Washington Memorial Heritage has worked to ensure that the enduring ideas represented at Valley Forge remain accessible, relevant and deeply meaningful for generations to come. That is why the partnership with Sun East Foundation is so important. Through our partnership, we have strengthened our outreach to school groups who visit us.  Working with a history intern, we created an interactive scavenger hunt, a ‘quote puzzle,’ and several other activities designed to help us engage more effectively with young people. We also provided teachers with follow-up materials for use in the classroom. We want to sincerely thank Sun East Foundation for helping us to keep this vital history alive by supporting our project.
