Who We Support Chartered in 2011, the Sun East Foundation is the philanthropic arm of Sun East Federal Credit Union. The purpose of the Sun East Foundation is to provide funding to non-profit organizations that serve the Greater Brandywine Valley. Grants are available to qualified 501(c)3 organizations that have a primary focus on Education, Health & Human Services, or Natural, Cultural, & Historic Preservation. The Sun East Foundation is a registered 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization governed by a Board of Directors and steered by an Executive Director who manages operations and fund disbursements. Who We Support Education Student development, youth camps, and tutoring are examples of educational programs that are supported by the Sun East Foundation. Health & Human Services We support programs tackling poverty, hunger, illness, special needs, mental health, seniors, veterans’ needs and other local humanitarian services. Natural, Cultural, & Historic Preservation Initiatives for land conservation, museums, and the arts are among those that will be considered for grant funding. CADES provides early intervention, school-age, adult day, and community living programs for children and adults with intellectual and physical disabilities. For the annual CADES Putt-Putt Palooza fundraiser, individuals and organizations build golf holes and place them throughout the CADES facility at 401 Rutgers Avenue in Swarthmore. Then, golfers not only have a unique golf course to enjoy, but also get a glimpse of the adapted technology and other materials used to foster growth, development, and community engagement for those served by CADES. Sun East has been a regular sponsor of this event. This year’s golf hole theme was “All Things Philly!” Our team built and staffed a hole honoring Boathouse Row. Tender Hearts’ mission is to assist and support medically fragile children and their families throughout the state of Delaware in order to create a better quality of life. For example, they help make possible the Early Learning Success in Academics for Preschoolers (ESLA Program) that helps children continue to progress academically and relieves some of the stress of a lengthy hospital stay by providing a bit of educational normalcy. Also, they help families acquire services, items, and assistive devices in order to positively impact the lives of their medically fragile child and enable them to experience more of the world. Sun East not only provides funding for Tender Hearts, but also regularly volunteer to help bring joy to the community they serve. Most recently, we helped staff their Valentine Smile party at Nemours Hospital in February and wrapped holiday gifts for participating families in December. Teachers’ Teammates is a nonprofit built by people in the field of education and residents of Delaware County who recognize that teachers must reach deep into their own wallets far too often to buy the basic supplies their classrooms need. Their mission is to ensure all K-12 students and teachers in Delaware County, PA, have the resources to thrive in their education, and Sun East eagerly supports their efforts with funding and volunteerism. Recently our team brought three large boxes of donated classroom supplies to their warehouse. We then worked with the Teachers’ Teammates staff to organize reading kits and other donations that will make it easier for local teachers to do their important work of inspiring and educating our youth. Kennett Area Community Service provides a variety of critical programs and adult education sessions that align with Sun East Foundation’s grant program. KACS Food Cupboard is the largest food cupboard in Southern Chester County, feeding over 3,000 people every month. KACS Social Services Program helps connect vulnerable individuals and families with sustainable living solutions. Their Getting Ahead program is a 16-session curriculum that helps individuals in poverty build their resources for a more prosperous life for themselves, their families, and their communities. The Bridges Out of Poverty community support program at KACS provides a family of concepts, workshops, and products to help employers, community organizations, social service agencies, and individuals address and reduce poverty in a comprehensive way. Sun East employees frequently roll up our sleeves to help pack produce at the Food Cupboard. The Sun East Foundation sponsored The Barn at Spring Brook Farm’s Autumn Fest Socialization Event. The Barn was created as a fully handicapped-accessible facility so that children who might otherwise not be able to experience the complete range of farm experiences and involvement in animal care would be able to do so. Some of the common diagnoses of children served include Autism Spectrum Disorder, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Epilepsy and Developmental Delay. The Barn is a place of peace and life enrichment for children with disabilities and their families. Family Support Line advances the prevention and treatment of child sexual abuse in Delaware County. Funding from the Sun East Foundation provides resources needed to serve children who are referred when there is an allegation of child abuse. Family Support Line provides a child friendly and safe space for children to disclose abuse, receive treatment and case management services, and begin the healing process. The organization’s “Room to Heal” is stocked with items for children who have experienced abuse and/or may need to transition from location to location. Keep Music Alive’s mission is to help more children reap the educational, therapeutic and social benefits of playing music. Each year, Keep Music Alive partners with over 1,200 music schools and stores to offer free lessons to new students and host special events that benefit children playing music. 🎵 Additionally, the organization hosts numerous Musical Petting Zoo programs each year where unique and melodic percussion and stringed instruments are made available to touch and play. They also run an After-School Music Lesson program for under-resourced students. Sun East Foundation is proud to help Keep Music Alive provide music education throughout the community.
